Abstract Four bacterial isolates were isolated from hydrocarbon contaminated soil collected in Korea. The isolated bacteria were tested for their heavy metal resistance using different concentrations of Pb2+, Cd2+, Cu2+ and Cr6+ (0-100 mg L-1) on Tris-minimal medium by the agar diffusion method. The results showed that Cu2+ and Pb2+ resistance was the most widespread. Additionally, none of the tested isolates tolerated Cr6+. Specifically, the bacterial isolate Bacillus X4 showed multiple metal resistance to Cu2+, Pb2+ and Cd2+ at concentrations of 50, 50 and 10 mg L-1, respectively. The resistant bacterium was identified as Bacillus megaterium X4 based on its 16S rRNA. Overall, the results of this study suggest that Bacillus megaterium X4 can be used to remediate heavy metals from hydrocarbon contaminated soils
