Abstract This paper explores the impacts of rural out-migration on rural livelihoods, especially in agricultural productivity and household incomes. The general findings of the study indicated that migrant and non-migrant household differed significantly in livelihood activities with respect to agricultural production, household incomes, resource use, and management. It was observed that migrant households cultivate the farm less intensively as compared to non-migrant households in the villages. Additionally, migrant households are better off in cash income and have higher propensity to migrate in countries paying high wages. The survey revealed that high return inflows of remittances from international migrants had substantial impact on declining rural poverty at the grassroots level. However, the exodus outflow of migrants resulted in shortage of human power in the villages. Consequently, abandonment of agricultural land is becoming normal phenomenon in the villages. Nevertheless, high inflows of remittances often outweighed the subsistence farming and thus, out-migration has become a usual phenomenon for securing livelihood in the villages.
