Abstract Ethiopia is a highly populous nation (>80 million people) in the Horn of Africa with relatively faster population
growth rate (2.6% per annum). The country often suffers risks of food insecurity largely due to recurring drought
that often affects crop production. Most of Ethiopian agriculture is not high tech based and dominated by small scale
farmers leading to low productivity. The nation¡¯s inland capture fishery has been out of control and failed to sustain
fish resources. Most lakes have been experiencing overexploitation, degradation of biological diversity and reduction
in fish population. It, thus, becomes imperative to encourage and implement a sustainable aquaculture as a counter
measure for ensuring food security and poverty alleviation. To develop effective aquaculture in Ethiopia, it is first
needed to assess the actual potential thereby to build effective strategy. Therefore, this paper is intended to review
the current status and actual potential of aquaculture, and to suggest a viable approach for effective aquaculture
development in Ethiopia.
