Abstract |
Two hundred bacterial strains were isolated from soil around the rhizosphere of healthy pepper plants in a greenhouse. The strains were screened in vitro for their ability to inhibit several important pathogens. Among them, a strain KB27 showed strong antagonistic activity against plant pathogens. The strain KB27 was identified using physiological, biochemical tests, and 16S rRNA gene analyses. Based on these results, the strain KB27 was identified as Bacillus subtilis. The bacterial suspension was used to check its antagonistic effect in vitro condition. We found that live bacteria are responsible for its activity. Whether its antagonistic activity is relatively consistent in plant, we carried out greenhouse experiments to determine its effectiveness to control the anthracnose disease on pepper caused by C. acutatum and the soft rot on Chinese cabbage caused by P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum. At result, drench applications of this strain (3.3 ¡¿ 108 CFU/mL) into the pots cultivating pepper and Chinese cabbage, drastically reduced the disease severity, compared to the non-treated plants. To evaluate bio-control efficacy of this strain under field conditions, we conducted experiments with randomized block design against pepper anthracnose and Chinese cabbage soft rot disease. Disease severities were 34.5% and 53.0% in case of non-treated controls of anthracnose and soft rot disease, respectively. While, Bacillus strain KB27 treated plants showed 12.5% and 24.2% disease severities on pepper and Chinese cabbage, respectively. These results demonstrated that Bacillus strain KB27 is a useful biological control agent (BCA) against anthracnose disease on pepper caused by C. acutatum and soft rot on Chinese cabbage caused by P. carotovorum subsp. carotovorum, under greenhouse as well as field conditions. |
