Abstract This study analyzed risk reporting of domestic newspapers on Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) which broke out in
large scale in 2010 through 2011 and perception of recipients. It aims to investigate if domestic newspapers actively
'Risk Communication' which is vital in maintaining the safety of food. For this purpose, this study analyzed 1,158
articles related to FMD reported from November 29, 2010 through April 30, 2011 in Chosun Daily, Gangwon Daily
and Maeil Daily Newspaper (a local newspaper for Daegu-Gyeongbuk). As the result of analysis on reporting amount
by phase after classifying the period of analysis into 3 phases (initial-serious-safe), all the 3 newspapers reported
'serious' phase in 58-81% of all reporting, which is slanted. As the result of investigation on the sources of news,
administrative agency took up 56.3-76.2% of all sources. As the result of analysis on contents frames of FMD-related
reporting in types, the proportion of 'Response/countermeasure frame' which deal with risk countermeasures of
administrative agencies was the highest with 30.6-44.8%. The study also conducted experiment on 278 persons to
investigate perception of recipients on the reporting of FMD risk reporting. It looked into what difference the groups,
who were exposed to risk-emphasizing frame, safety-emphasizing frame, and 'Neutral stimulus', displayed in FMD
risk perception. As the result of experiment, the more a group was exposed to risk-emphasizing news frames, the
more the group negatively and seriously perceives about the risks of FMD.
