Title Participation of Farmers' Organizations and Determinants of Management Scale: Focusing on Farmers in Kuriyama, Japan

Abstract This research targets the farms in Kuriyama, Japan, a community which solving their own agricultural issues such
as training successors and farmland mobilization phenomenon on a regional basis. The study analyzes future
intentions of participating in farmer¡¯s organization and expanding farmland. The result indicates that firstly, the farms
with a successor shows higher tendency to participate in farmer¡¯s organization as well as to expand their farmland
compared to the farms without a successor. Secondly, when the farming area increases by 1 ha, more farms tends
to participate in farmer¡¯s organization and intends for farmland expansion. However, after a certain area is acquired,
the tendencies to join the farmer¡¯s organization and the intension of farm land expansion decreases. Thirdly, tenant
farms show a decrease in intension to participate in farmer¡¯s organization and to expand their farm lands.
